Understanding Chikungunya: Symptoms, Transmission, and Treatment

02 - October - 2024 :تازہ کاری کا وقت

Chikungunya is a viral disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV), which is transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus was first identified in the United Republic of Tanzania in 1952 and has since been found in other countries in Africa and Asia.

Chikungunya virus is spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. Its symptoms are similar to those of dengue and Zika, which can lead to misdiagnosis. The most common symptoms include fever and joint pain, along with headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, and rash.

Symptoms usually develop between three and seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito, but they can appear as early as two days or as late as 12 days after the bite.

Chikungunya is not contagious between people, as it spreads only through mosquito bites. The risk of transmitting the virus to an uninfected mosquito is highest in the first week of the illness.

Treatment for chikungunya focuses on managing symptoms, staying hydrated, and getting plenty of rest. It's important to prevent mosquito bites during the first week of illness, as the virus can be found in the blood during this time and can be transmitted to other mosquitoes through bites.

If you suspect you have chikungunya, it's important to seek medical attention from a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment. Visit our Modern Hospital for better and speedy treatment.
